My default audiences are either our high-school community (adults and teens) or a someone who disagrees with the writer or someone outside of our class. I think in our diverse, fragmented world, it's important for people to be able to show they understand opposing viewpoints, and then be able to persuade others to see their own. I have been teaching the art of good writing to students since 1972 and outside of class I help students create successful college and scholarship essays. Students and teachers can use this to deconstruct prompts.   Finally, the SOAP format, when combined with Aristotle's form, can help students write one or ten page essays effectively.   The five paragraph essay limits students into about 1  1/2 pages. Part 5: Without serious training in the art of writing, students' growth as writers is not likely.
